The Noong Ta Klong Green Pea Eggplant (aka: Turkey Berry) is an interesting and fun eggplant to grow! Parent plant comes from Baker's Seeds and has been adapted to grow in a hydroponic or aeroponic growing system in the Southeast region. This means a stronger and healthier plant if you grow it in hydroponic, aeroponic, or aquaponic system like the Tower Garden FLEX.
Noong Ta Klong Green Pea Eggplant (aka Turkey Berry) does well in a hydroponic system due to consistent watering needs. Our experience is that it needs to get to a stage where the stem is woody before it really begins to produce buds and pea-sized eggplants. We put our starts out after nights are consistently above 65ºF. This eggplant grew just fine on the lower part of our hydroponic system through the hot and humid southern months. Note, plan on offering these woody stems some sort of support (ours leaned over a fence rail.) It really hit it's stride to flower and produce when temps cooled to the 70ºs-80ºs F. Very prolific at this stage of growth.
According to Baker's Creek, they found this plant growing semi-wild in a village garden in Noong Ta Klong, Thailand. It is used "under ripe" when fruit is at the bright green stage (orange is over-ripe & bitter) in Thai dishes that feature green curry and some types of chili sauces that allow this eggplant to explode with flavor when eaten in this combination. It is considered in this region as more of a spice than a vegetable.
