ABOUT:

Bok Choy (also referred to as Pak Choi ) is an asian green that is compact and quick growing. We recommend this plant for anyone new to growing their own greens, because it's quick grow cycle offering early gratification soon after seeding. You can get continuous growth from this Bok Choy by pruning the outer leaves at the stem base for continued growth (about three harvests), but bear in mind this may attract aphids (this is why commercially they cut the entire head as when a plant is wounded it produces pharomones that will attract pests.)

This particular Bok Choy seed has adapted to grow in a hydroponic system which will mean a stronger and healthier plant if you grow it in hydroponic, aeroponic, or aquaponic system like the Tower Garden FLEX or Farm Stand. This Bok Choy plant can be grown indoors under grow lights or outdoors during the cool season (nights above 50ºF and daytime temps between 60ºF and 80ºF ideal) for optimum growth.

NUTRITION PROFILE:

The dark, leafy greens of Bok Choy indicate that it's full of antioxidants and other compounds that aid in repairing cell damage within the body and promoting better health. Bok Choy is also an excellent source of the flavonoid quercetin that helps reduce inflammation in the body. This plant also contains folate and vitamin B6 which aid in removing homocysteine from your blood. If you have too much homocysteine in your blood, it can damage your blood vessels, thereby increasing your risk of heart problems.

CULINARY USES:

You may have seen this plant in your local grocery store. When I've seen it, it is unappealing and limp as it is not conducive to a long shelf life—that's where growing it yourself will offer the true health benefits that Bok Choy offers. Use in soups and stir fries. We've also used chopped up in salads, on tacos and even put a leaf on a hamburger when we ran out of other lettuce! Yum! If you like crunchy romaine type lettuce, you'll love Bok Choy!
