Black Cherry Tomato variety is our daughter's favorite snacking tomato. It slowly turns from light green, to a light shade of red and then the shoulders of the tomato darken giving almost a mahogany tone. Final fruit size ends up between an inch to an inch-and-a half in diameter.
Black Cherry was first developed by the late Vince Sapp from a natural cross, then released in 2003. This indeterminate tomato variety has adapted to grow in a hydroponic system which will mean a stronger and more prolific plant if you grow it in hydroponic, aeroponic, or aquaponic system like the Tower Garden FLEX. We do not recommend this variety for indoors unless you have an extra-large grow light set-up — it's footprint is definitely not conducive to the Aerogarden or Zip Grow — we recommend to instead opt to grow outdoors during the warm season (nights above 65ºF) for optimum production.
Because it's such a great producer, we love these little tomatoes for snacking, on tomato galettes, or use fresh or ferment to use as a salad topping. Have a large harvest? No problem! Sundry excess harvest or on a dehydrator to use whenever needed on mini pizzas as sun-dried tomatoes or freeze to use in tomato soups throughout the winter months — the list goes on!
