Birdie Rouge Micro Dwarf Cherry Tomatoes are attributed to from the Netherlands. In Dutch, "Birdie" means "favorite, darling, pet, sweetheart, dear, birdie" and "Rouge" meaning face paint typically applied to the cheeks. Evidently this little tomato reminded its horticulturalist of their cheek blush. You'll understand why this is an aptly named little tomato plant when you grow them. Small, but plentiful, this compact variety of cherry tomato begins as other micro dwarf tomatoes with lime green colored fruit. Birdie Rouge, however, starts to turn a tangerine sort of orange and after a few more days, she will develop a reddish hue on the underside of the tomato — the perfect shade for any rouge. ;)
Just like other micro dwarf varieties, Birdie Rouge has been purposely and patiently bred to maintain it's size staying between 12"-16" tall in height and width making it ideal for small spaces. Birdie Rouge Cherry Tomatoes typically produce multiple blossoms set and each blossom cluster has 5-7 blossoms. If growing indoors or out, we recommend hand pollinated to produce 3/4"-1" round cherry tomatoes. Birdie Rouge Micro-Dwarf Tomato has close leaf sets, so some careful and selective strategic pruning will help these little power house producers flourish all the more. The parent plants of these seeds, in particular, were grown hydroponically, so they have adapted to these growing conditions and are ideal for a hydroponic, aeroponic, or aquaponic systems like the vertical garden Tower Garden or the compact counter garden Aerogardens*.
The Birdie Rouge Micro Dwarf Cherry Tomato makes a colorful "pop" of color to any salad and looks and tastes great alongside other favorites like Jochalos. Remember, do not refrigerate harvested cherry tomatoes.
